Information on Group Academics for IEA users

2026-2027 Group Academics is comprised of the following courses which meet IEA requirements:

Social Sciences through Project Based Learning - This course is taught by Lacey Horwitz and Ellen Fournier and focuses on social studies concepts appropriate for the learner's grade level as well as the study of world geography and events and influential people through history through project based learning. It includes a modified and/or functional curriculum for learners who require one, as well as assistive access and learning support for learners who require them. Learning objectives include increasing pragmatic language skills and executive functioning skills through teamwork and project management as well as increasing the learner's ability to gather information from resources, understand and express fact vs. opinion, inference, compare and contrast, understand and relate cause and effect, predict, sequence timelines and events, ask and answer WHY and HOW questions, paraphrase and summarize and know and identify trusted resources.

ELA: Novel Study, Written Expression, Language and Literacy - This course is taught by Krista Posey, Tracy Sanjurjo and Lacey Horwitz and focuses on all aspects of language arts including phonics, literacy, reading comprehension and written expression. It includes a modified and/or functional curriculum for learners who require one as well as assistive access and learning support for learners who require them. Learning objectives include increasing learner's engagement with written materials, increasing expressive and receptive language skills, vocabulary knowledge and concept knowledge and instruction in the areas of phonics, literacy, grammar, spelling and writing. 

Math - This course is taught by Krista Posey and Tracy Sanjurjo and focuses on math skills and concepts through functional lessons and games. Learning objectives include increasing math concept knowledge as well as a focus on real word applications, building foundational skills, and using hands on manipulatives. This course includes a modified and/or functional curriculum for learners who require one as well as assistive access and learning support for learners who require them.

Science - This course is taught by Krista Posey and Tracy Sanjurjo and focuses on science concepts through hands-on learning, experiments and STEM projects.  This course includes a modified and/or functional curriculum for learners who require one as well as assistive access and learning support for learners who require them. Learning objectives include observing the world around us, using the scientific

method to answer questions, and encouraging vocabulary development and self reflection in addition to gaining an understanding of scientific concepts and skills. 

Modified Social studies: World Geography - instructed by Ellen Fournier. This is a modified class that will focus learning about the 7 Continents and the 5 oceans. The learners will learn to identify the continents on a world map, and explore a couple of countries and animals in each continent.

Modified Science - this course is taught by Ellen Fournier and Lacey Horwitz and focuses on biology (human body, body systems, health and hygiene), life science (natural wonders, landforms, earth science), chemistry (the science of cooking) and basic physics (simple machines). This is a modified class that will focus on functional lessons in core science areas with the objective to develop vocabulary, problem solving skills, and concept knowledge.

Modified Math - this course is instructed by Ellen Fournier and focuses on functional math concepts surrounding money and time. Learning objectives are to be able to manage and understand personal and group schedules, money concepts and functional math concepts necessary for independent living.
